Yes. It is a well-known and harmless side effect of most whitening strips that temporary white spots can appear on the enamel. This happens because the strips block saliva, which normally keeps teeth hydrated. While the strips are on, your teeth can become slightly dehydrated. This temporary dryness can make certain parts of the enamel appear whiter than others, creating small white speckles or patches. Once your teeth naturally rehydrate from saliva, they return to their normal, even colour – usually within a few hours to a day.
The dark substance is most likely aluminium staining from the tube and cap. This can happen when a small amount of toothpaste residue stays on the threads and reacts with the aluminium. It may look unpleasant, but the toothpaste remains safe to use. If you do not feel comfortable using toothpaste that has picked up discoloration from the cap area, we recommend wiping the opening with a paper towel before applying the toothpaste to your toothbrush.
